Should you delete your 6.7 Powerstroke

Should you delete your 6.7 Powerstroke

If you own a Ford F-250, F-350, or F-450 with the mighty 6.7 Powerstroke diesel engine, you’re almost certainly aware of the potential emissions system issues.

Starting in 2007, new government mandates required OEMs to begin installing Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), and eventually Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems as a factory component.

And despite nearly two decades of use, these emissions systems are notorious for failing. And when (not if) issues arise, it can cost thousands to repair.

The Birth of Diesel Deletes

Almost as soon as these emissions parts were introduced for the Powerstroke engine platform, owners began removing them—known as “deleting”. While the government turned a blind eye for a few years, it wasn’t long until law enforcement came running for the diesel industry.

Between 2007 and 2024, hundreds (if not thousands) of brands, shops, and even individual owners have been targeted for removing emissions equipment.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), claims that Congress has granted them the power to enforce emissions-related laws.

Whether the EPA does or does not have that power is hotly debated—what isn’t up for debate, is the effect it has had. Brands and shops have paid millions of dollars in fines, court costs, and lawyer fees.

From small diesel repair shops being slapped with six-figure fines to owners of diesel performance parts manufacturers being sent to prison (yes, prison), deletes have become a sore subject in the diesel space.

Deleting the 6.7 Powerstroke

Despite the legal and financial risk, deletes are still popular—and we wouldn’t tell you otherwise.

For good reason, many 6.7 Powerstroke owners are still willing to roll the dice on purchasing illegal parts and tuning—whatever it takes to get those problematic emissions parts off the truck.

But it’s not as simple as it once was. The vast majority of the companies selling delete parts in 2024 are based outside of the United States. Some of them sell reputable parts and tuning, some do not.

If you’re thinking about deleting your 6.7 Powerstroke, our only advice is to be cautious. If you live in the United States, removing emissions equipment is federally illegal, period.

Despite what you may read in Facebook groups or what that “one guy” told you, there are no exceptions for farm equipment, race trucks, or any other title you might give your Ford F-250/F-350/F-450.

Beyond federal law, you will need to consider the possibility of local enforcement.

Certain states/counties/cities have begun inspecting trucks for emissions equipment. In Colorado, for example, local law enforcement has begun installing cameras on highway on-ramps—watching for diesel trucks that emit soot when merging (a tell-tale sign of missing emissions equipment).

So, tread lightly.

Keep Your Emissions Equipment, Remove the Problems

To be clear, we are not interested in telling anyone what to do. We understand why owners remove emissions equipment—but there is now an alternative.

FASS EGR Filter Kits remove 85% of the soot (particulate matter) from the EGR stream. Without a filter in place, this soot can wreak havoc—plugging EGR valves, coolers, and sending abrasive material throughout your engine.

Over time, this causes premature failure of pricey EGR components, and in many cases, the engine itself.

By installing an EGR Filter Kit, you can increase the life of your 6.7 Powerstroke’s EGR System by 6x or more. Over a truck’s life, this can save thousands in preventable repairs!

The Next Evolution of Diesel

For 2017-2019 Ford Super Duty owners who can’t/won’t delete emissions equipment, FASS EGR Filter Kits are worth a look.

Alongside dozens of new emissions-on solutions including tuning, performance parts, and more, FASS EGR Filter Kits represent a new day in diesel performance.
